Book Selection Game

So I picked 25 books to take to Canada (I was planning on 20, but a successful lobby by a certain group of books persuaded me to increase my limit), and I thought I would share. However, in an effort to make it more interesting than just a list of books, I’ve decided to make it a game. Unfortunately, I don’t have any prizes to give away.

Here’s how it works, below I have blanks representing the letters in the titles of books and the last name of the primary author or editor. You may guess titles, author/editors, or both by leaving comments. As correct guesses are made, I will replace the blanks with answers, the person who made the guess, and affiliate links where appropriate. Hints may be provided as the game progresses.

Here are the books in a random order:

  1. The Unity of the Bible by Fuller (partial title by Deborah, rest by Tom after RSET)
  2. Great Expectations by Dickens (Tom after RSE)
  3. A Praying Life by Miller (Tom after R)
  4. The Idiot by Dostoevsky (Matt after RSETHLN)
  5. Jack by Sayer (Matt after RSETHLN)
  6. The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Burroughs (Matt P. after R)
  7. Anne of Avonlea by Montgomery (Tom after RSE)
  8. The Creeds of Christendom: The History of Creeds by Schaff (Matt P. after R)
  9. Vintage Church by Driscoll (Tom after R)
  10. Living Prayerfully by Page (Tom after RS)
  11. A Sacrifice of Praise edited by Trott (Matt P. after RS)
  12. Anne of Green Gables by Montgomery (Tom after RSE)
  13. Here I Stand by Bainton (Tom after RS)
  14. Anne of Ingleside by Montgomery (Tom after RSE)
  15. A Chance to Die by Elliot (Tom after RSE)
  16. Anne of the Island by Montgomery (Tom after RSE)
  17. Ben-Hur by Wallace (Matt P. after R)
  18. Anne’s House of Dreams by Montgomery (Tom after RSE)
  19. The Mortification of Sin by Owen (Matt P. after RS)
  20. The Weight of Glory by Lewis (Tom after RS)
  21. Each for the Other by Chapell (Tom after RSE)
  22. This Momentary Marriage by Piper (author by Heidi, Title by Tom after R))
  23. Anne of Windy Poplars by Montgomery (Tom after RS)
  24. The Christian Lover by Haykin (Matt P. after RS)
  25. The Valley of Vision by Bennett (Tom after RSET)

Let the game begin.

The hints are going to be hangman style. I have filled in: R, S, E, T, H, L, N

Can I take the freebie? The Bible by God

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 29, 2010 at 4:13 PM CDT

Deborah,

I am planning on taking my Bible, but I'm not counting it in my 25 (just like I'm not counting my Greek textbook, interlinear New Testament, they seem different... and they were already in a box to go). I suppose I should have mentioned that in the post.

Comment from Matt P. on April 29, 2010 at 7:57 PM CDT

Might I guess that the hyphenated title is Moby-Dick by Melville? I am presently reading Billy Budd by the same.

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 29, 2010 at 9:17 PM CDT

Piper is one of the authors.

The hyphenated title isn't Moby-Dick... it isn't overly obvious, but if you select the text, it is possible to see that it is actually 3 blanks on each side of the hyphen (actually now an R is filled in). I once listened to Moby-Dick and didn't enjoy it; I found it overly tedious.

Well, let me then try Ben-Hur by Wallace. I think it's Wallace.

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 29, 2010 at 9:34 PM CDT

Ben-Hur by Wallace it is.

Comment from Matt P. on April 30, 2010 at 7:35 AM CDT

The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment by Burroughs (6). I like this game.

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 7:44 AM CDT

Glad you're enjoying, Matt.

I've decided to go ahead and give partial credit on titles, so long as this isn't abused, so Deborah's answer does put something on the board.

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 10:15 AM CDT

Hmm... I suppose since you are graduating tomorrow, I can give you the e then... instead of after RSTL&N...

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 10:58 AM CDT

Good job Tom, you got those in just before S.

Comment from Matt P. on April 30, 2010 at 10:59 AM CDT

The Creeds of Christendom: The History of Creeds by Schaff (8)

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 11:05 AM CDT

Matt's got in under the wire too

Comment from Heidi on April 30, 2010 at 11:42 AM CDT

Can I guess Christ? for a Paritial guess? I was going to guess Jesus too, but that would be more obvious with the "s" being out :).

Comment from Heidi on April 30, 2010 at 11:43 AM CDT

Oh and Sproul... like R.C. Sproul, since you seem to only be doing last names :)

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 11:50 AM CDT

"Christ" is not a word in any of the titles, but I am not going to comment on whether it is contained in any words (for example "unchristened" would still be a possible word)

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 11:52 AM CDT

Not Sproul... and yeah, I'm doing just last names to avoid things like deciding between R. C. RC and Robert Charles.

Comment from Matt P. on April 30, 2010 at 1:08 PM CDT

A Sacrifice of Praise (edited?) by Trott

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 1:27 PM CDT

Right again Matt.

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on April 30, 2010 at 1:33 PM CDT

I just noticed that I missed an 'r' earlier- so 10 has changed a bit.

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on May 1, 2010 at 6:54 PM CDT

E's have been revealed in honor of Bethany, who graduated today.

Comment from Tom on May 2, 2010 at 8:44 AM CDT

1. The Guide to the Bible, Miller

Comment from Tom on May 2, 2010 at 8:56 AM CDT

21. Each for the Other, Chapell

Comment from Tom on May 2, 2010 at 9:04 AM CDT

12. Anne of Green Gables, Montgomery

Comment from Tom on May 2, 2010 at 9:17 AM CDT

Oops, I retract my solution to #1, since the "e" of Guide would have appeared in the clue.

7. Anne of Avonlea, also Montgomery? So much for the no-repeat-authors hypothesis. In that vein: Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne of the Island, Anne of Ingleside, all by Montgomery, are numbers 18, 23, 16, and 14, respectively. I feel like I hit the jackpot here.

Comment from Matt P. on May 2, 2010 at 9:52 AM CDT

Anne's House of Dreams by Montgomery. Tom, I assume that you're being nice to the rest of us by not immediately finishing the repeated author. Nor, then, will I.

Comment from Matt P. on May 2, 2010 at 9:52 AM CDT

Oh, you beat me by a minute. Never mind.

Comment from Tom on May 2, 2010 at 9:57 AM CDT

Yeah Matt, I didn't actually notice it immediately. But Wendy has all those books and caught on a little more quickly. Props to you on "mortification," though; I spent quite a while looking for books that ended in "ation of Sin" (and "ation of Sex"; wasn't able to rule that one out). Of course Amazon's auto-complete only works from the front, so I was guessing things like "normalization."

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on May 2, 2010 at 10:41 PM CDT

So now that you've discovered the Anne books I can say they were the reason for the limit jumping to 25 (I just couldn't justify taking 6 books that will only take a couple hours each to read if I was limiting myself to 20 books). They were also the reason for the random order- I thought it would be a little too obvious if I had 6 books with such a similar pattern for title/author in a row.

1. The Unity of the Bible - Fuller

Comment from Tom on May 2, 2010 at 11:36 PM CDT

25. The Valley of Vision, Bennett

Comment from Jennifer Ekstrand on May 3, 2010 at 9:18 AM CDT

As a hint to those who read the comments, the two remaining puzzles only share one unrevealed letter.
