Reading: *How the Irish Saved Civilization*
Right now I’m reading How The Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill. It was recommended in the Series of Talks I mentioned in an earlier blog post.
The basic gist is as Rome collapsed and Europe entered "the Dark Ages," the Irish preserved the classic writings and then became instrumental in re-educating Europe when some stability returned.
So far, I have found it quite interesting. Some of it has been educational, some of it funny, some of it profound. I don’t agree with the author’s opinion on everything (but I expect that). Although I find it to be worth my time to read, I will say that I do not recommend it universally. There is some content that requires a mature audience. The author uses strong profanity (and not in the context of a quotation) at least once. There is some sexual and violent content as well as discussion of alchohol. I think this content is handled relatively well and is important to the overall subject matter, but let the reader beware.
